Brienz, the starting point of our train ride, is a town on the northern shore of Lake Brienz, at the foot of the Brienzer Rothorn mountain, and located in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland.

The Brünig Pass, at an altitude of 1,008 meter (3,307 feet), connects the Bernese Oberland (Canton of Bern) and central Switzerland. It is on the watershed between the upper reaches of the Aare river, which flows through Lake Brienz and Lake Thun, and the Sarner Aa river, which flows into Lake Lucerne.

The destination, Lucerne or in German Luzern, is located in the heart of Switzerland. Lucerne is a city in central Switzerland, in the German-speaking portion of the country. Lucerne is the capital of the Canton of Lucerne and is one of the most popular tourist towns in Switzerland.
